Social Scientists Biased? NO!?!? It can't be true!

Liberals outnumber conservatives at elite universities by 6-1. SIX TO ONE! That is easily the most distorted misrepresentation and clear evidence of discriminatory behavior on the part of academics one could ever ask to see. If you lean to the right you already know this fact. If you lean to the left you are purposefully and willfully ignorant of this fact. New York Times published a great article on the subject showcasing some research by Ted Haidt, UVA professor... who himself is a lone voice in a sea of liberal self-delusion.

The best point he made that was cited by the NYT author was to point out the inherent, if not laughable hypocrisy that exists among the liberal social science community:

“Anywhere in the world that social psychologists see women or minorities underrepresented by a factor of two or three, our minds jump to discrimination as the explanation,” said Dr. Haidt, who called himself a longtime liberal turned centrist. “But when we find out that conservatives are underrepresented among us by a factor of more than 100, suddenly everyone finds it quite easy to generate alternate explanations.”

  1. Hi Mark,

this is Nan(dalal) from Albemarle. Glad to see you're putting thoughts down in this medium. One quibble: Haidt is a social psychologist--the wider world of social science is much bigger and alternately more disturbing and more encouraging (let's say the Frances Fox Piven---Sendhil Mullainathan scale.) There are MANY psych researchers who are not culturally or politically liberal and you'll find many them in the disciplines of evolutionary psych, experimental, neuropsych and anything else requiring biological grounding. Seth Roberts is a more famous example. Satoshi Kanazawa is another. Happy blogging.
